Located on a hillside site with panoramic views, this unusual freestanding San Francisco home extensively remodeled two living units and removed the existing attic space to make way for a full upper floor. The reimagined facade gives the building a new street presence, while the reorganization of interior space on all three floors takes advantage of light and views.
The views to the south are compressed, showcasing the classic textures of San Francisco’s heritage – stately Victorians stepping up the hillside toward Sutro Tower, while the views to the north open over the chasm of the Haight and Panhandle, sweeping past the domed figure of St Ignatius Church to the hills of Marin beyond.
The warmth of walnut, used in the casework, floors, and stair screen, provides a unifying element throughout helping to create a comfortable home for three generations of family.
